 Briarcrest 2007-08

African Dance & Drums:  All 1st & 2nd graders will spend 4 weeks with a dance artist and will then all perform together for their school and the community.  Project Leader: Allen Leslie $800

 Handwriting Without Tears:  Materials are purchased in order to help eliminate problems with letter formation, reversals, legibility and word spacing for Kindergartners.  Project Leader: Bob Koontz  $899

Brookside 2007-08

 Salmon Story Mural:  Artist time was given so the 3rd graders could create an educational mural exhibit in the school’s foyer.  Project Leader:  Kathryn Noble  $1,420

 History of Rock & Roll:  6th graders will work with an artist to learn authentic dances and see the progression & evolution of the guitar.  A performance for their school & community will be held in May 2008. Project Leader: Laurie Bell  $300

 

 Echo Lake 2007-08

 Reaching the next level with ReadWell:  Purchase of ReadWell Plus curriculum to support learning disabled students in the Resource Room. Project Leader: Tricia McKibben  $630

 Writers in Residence:  Pairing a writer/mentor with the Pacific Northwest Writers Association with a teacher and students in each grade level to facilitate one or more writing workshops.  Project Leader: Dennis Day  $2,000

 Service Learning through Science:  Admission given to 5th graders to participate in a Wetland Study through the Pacific Science Center.  Project Leader: Molly Burrows  $500

 

 Lake Forest Park 2007-08

 Reading Fluency Support:  Reading games purchased for both primary and intermediate grades for guided and independent practice. Project Leader: Bambi Harvey  $561

 Windows On The Future:  Intermediate students will go on college visits so that the idea of college is in the back of their mind and thus preparing them to attend to one’s education now.  Project Leader: Dr. Peter Hodges  $925

 

 

Meridian Park 2007-08

 Ancient China’s Legacy:  Supplies for 6th graders who will use academic & applied arts skills to design, create, and display unique Chinese painted silk scarves.  Project Leader: Jan Laskelle  $260

 Bilingual Books:  45 bilingual books will be purchased for the English Language Learners and their families.  Project Leader: Jenny Hillger $900

 Creativity for Community:  Supplies are provided in order for 4th – 6th grades can learn the history of silk manufacturing, contemporary theory and design.  They will create unique handcrafted bandanas and deliver them as gifts of appreciation to each MP classified staff.  Project Leader: Sandi James  $175

 E Pluribus Unum:  Paint supplies will be used for each student to create a landscape.  This will create a long continuous landscape, varying in grade level, linking either social studies or science so that the viewer who walks along will travel from one environment to another.  Project Leader: Jenny Hillger  $590

 Parkwood 2007-08

 Listening & Reading Centers:  8 CD/cassette listening centers and headphones will be purchased so K-2 students can listen and see the words as they follow along with the story.  This is especially useful with ELL students.  Project Leader: Amy Roraback  $1,750

 Coming to America Murals:  Art supplies will be provided to create 6 murals in the round.  This is a unit of study for 4th – 6th grades that explores immigration to America.  Project Leader: Mary Servais  $538

 Renewing Community Through Art:  Teacher planning, collaboration time, and art supplies are given to assist K-6 create self-portraits representing their new school community.  Project Leaders: Betty Vandenberg & Linda Luebke  $500

 Take Home Science Experiments:  Science bags with equipment will provide 5th grade students and their parents an opportunity to do the projects at home.  Project Leader: Jan Pembrooke  $500

 Ridgecrest 2007-08

 Tea Overboard!:  Eight drama classes will help 4th-6th grade students learn, in a creative way, about the history leading up to the American Revolution.  Project Leader: Jon Skoog  $2,000

 Northwest Native Tales:  Artist time is provided for 3rd grade students to study northwest native stories, develop, rehearse & perform them for their school.  Project Leader: Teresa Feaster. Partial grant $960

 6th Grade Camp:  An overnight stay for 6th graders to attend an environmental education camp.  Project Leader: Joanna Freeman  $1,800

 An Exploration into the Design Elements of Art:  Four classes for 2nd graders to explore the visual arts through a variety of mediums and techniques.  The art will then be showcased in April.  Project Leader: Wisty Holleman  $200

 Biography Book:  Approximately 44 non-fiction books (2 sets) will be purchased to give the highly capable 4-6th graders more choices to improve their critical thinking.  Project Leader: Melissa Storms  $378

 Building Community Mathematically:  Purchasing a collection of engaging computational & strategy-based math games.  Project Leader: Liz Whitney  $320

 Creative Movement Integration:  Supply 4 sets of creative music CDs for the 1st & 2nd grade self-contained program to teach dance concepts and skills.  Project Leader: Kathy Hitchner  $160

 Gripping Graphics:  Purchase of comic format pictorial stories entices reluctant readers to explore, learn and read.  Project Leader: Joanna Freeman  $400

 Shakespeare Experience:  An assembly for grades 3-6 performed by the Seattle Shakespeare Company and five in-depth class workshops for the 5/6 highly capable program.  Students will then design, rehearse and perform a Shakespearen play for the school community.  Anansi the Spider-The Musical:  An Artist in Residence will work with the 2nd & 3rd grade highly capable students on writing and producing an African based musical.  Project Leader: Kay Law  $400

 Adventures to Asia:  K-2 field trips to Seattle & Wing Luke Asian Art Museums, International District and NW Folklife Festival to develop their desire to try new foods, games, languages and art forms. Project Leader: Melissa Walsh  Partial grant $746

 Children’s Center 2007-08

 Pigs on Parade IV:  Paper Mache materials are provided so K-6 students can create whimsical pigs in the spirit of the Pike Place Market’s pigs.  Project Leader: Cody Adams  $250

 Dangerous Decibels:  Health classes will use this kit with various activities to show how their ears work and how noise can damage them.  Project Leader: Kate Jablonski  $103

 Graphing Calculators:  TI-84 graphing calculators will be purchased to help supplement incomplete classroom sets & ensure equal access of this technology to all students.  Project Leader: Corrie Kuhn  $2,000

 A Migrant Trip:  Multiple performances by a bilingual musician will help Spanish I and ELL students learn about Latin music and the migrant experience.  Project Leader: Suzanne Hibbert  $700

 Visual Daytimers:  Digital photo keychains will be used to help disabled students communicate needs, wants and display activities throughout their day.  Project Leader: Veronica Cook  $400

 

 Multi-School 2007-08

 2008 Spring Bike Rodeo:  Self-contained students from around the district will be invited to use adapted bicycles and tricycles of varying styles & sizes.  Project Leader:  Marie Shaw  $1,400

 Shoe Box Activities:  Materials will be used to create 20 fine motor shoeboxes with 7 fine motor manipulation activities to be used by the Resource room and self-contained classes of MP, PW & BKS. Project Leader: Molly Wergeland  $224

 Community Role Models:  Guest speakers, with disabilities who use augmentative & alternative communication to speak, will come and speak to 200 disabled students about daily life, work and community living as well as leading art projects.  Project Leader: Christine Dunbar Partial grant $1,610

 Get in Tune:  Tuning of 1 piano at each elementary school and 3 pianos at each secondary school.  Project Leader: Frank Halferty. $2,000

 Save Our Music Festival:  Time for rehearsals, concert set-up & take down, and Choral stipends for conducting, rehearsing and organizing the annual Shoreline School District’s band, orchestra & choir festival. Project Leader: Janet Allison  $2,000

 Benefiting Students:  An assessment kit of flexible deep compression vests for the PT/OT department to use across the district for students with motor and/or sensory deficits.  Project Leader: Martha Abrego  $379
